About Dr. Given

Dr. Katie Given, MD, PhD, MBA is board certified in Dermatology and Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology (Mohs Surgery). She is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD) and of the American College of Mohs Surgery (FACMS). She holds a clinical appointment at UCSF and teaches the UCSF residents and fellows procedural dermatology and Mohs surgery at the San Francisco VA.

Her training includes Internal Medicine internship at the University of Chicago Hospitals, Dermatology residency at Yale-New Haven Hospitals, where she served as Chief Resident in her final year, and ACGME-accredited Fellowship in Mohs Surgery, reconstructive surgery, and cosmetics at UCSF. While in training, she was awarded a T32 NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Informatics, and worked with a Melanoma Tumor Board Registry, focusing on database quality and validation.

Dr. Given served as the Resident Representative to the Board of Directors for the ASDS/ASDSA (2019-2021) and is a current member of the Alumni Council for the MBSD at the University of Chicago (2021-2027). She is a Contributing Editor to the peer-reviewed journal Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Given is an active member of AAD, ASDS, ACMS and the AMA and participates on or co-chairs several related committees. She has authored peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics including management of advanced skin cancers, genetics of skin cancer, scar management, scar revision, novel skin imaging modalities, filler complications, cosmetic ingredients, botulinum toxin procedures. She speaks regularly at conferences on reconstructive surgery, scar revision, artificial intelligence, data registries, and innovation in healthcare.

Her PhD thesis at the University of Chicago explored Yersinia pestis (bubonic plague) bacterial pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, and DOD-funded anti-bioterrorism vaccine development efforts in the Howard Taylor Ricketts Laboratory (Biosafety Level 3) at the Argonne National Laboratories, under the mentorship of Dr. Olaf Schneewind.

Dr. Given grew up in the Bay Area and is motivated by innovation in medicine. She is passionate about improving healthcare and its delivery. She serves as a key opinion leader (KOL), consulting for and advising companies who are developing cutting-edge, cutaneous imaging modalities (recently FDA approved, new device indication), injection devices, vitiligo devices, and skin care products/cosmeceuticals.

Dr. Given enjoys spending time with her family, often exploring the outdoor beauty the Bay Area has to offer. An FAA-licensed pilot, with commercial, multi engine and instrument ratings, an expert skier, avid golfer, and ballroom dancer, Dr. Given enjoys life in the fast lane.
